February 22nd, 2010

Welcome back, TCF!

After the week off, and a chance to recharge, I hope everyone is ready to get back into the swing of things! TCF events are starting up now, and we'll be going full-tilt for the rest of the year!

First up will be Pyjama Bowling, followed closely by Christian Awareness Week. You can find out more details for both in the News Section. I would particularly draw your attention towards the need for volunteers at CAW.

As well, nominations for next year's executive are now open, which will be detailed in a separate e-mail. This next couple of weeks will, as such, be a time where those who will handle the reins of the group will step forward, and God will draw out his will for us in a tangible way!

Otherwise, there's plenty going on in the Bigger World, and ads are starting to show up for rooms and roommates, so check all of it out below!

In Christ,

-Ben

Divine Reflection:

The Gospel in 6 Minutes

Inspired Word:

1 Corinthians 15:1-11 (ESV)

1Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you— unless you believed in vain.

3For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, 5and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. 7Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. 9For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. 11Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.

News

Christian Awareness Week:

Christian Awareness Week: What is it? It is our now-annual event that is designed to publicly exhort Christ on campus, by running events which will proclaim the gospel and generally inform students about our beliefs and experiences. It is not a replacement for everyday evangelism on the part of our members, but it emerged last year as the single biggest outreach event we have ever done as a group, and we want to encourage every member possible to get involved in what we hope will be an even bigger outreach this year.

We are all called in Christ to preach the gospel, and we ourselves are in constant need of it. The gospel is our lifeline connecting us to God, and Jesus, at its center, is the provider of that life. There is nothing you can do in your school year that is more important than sharing this fact with the people around you who do not know it.

CAW will take place next week. If you're able to volunteer even an hour on any day that week, please do. If you cannot, because of time constraints, then please be in prayer, both leading up to and during the week. The schedule of events for Christian Awareness Week are posted below, but this is much more than a mere series of events, it is a spiritually-driven fight for souls on campus. And so we need your support, spiritually first and practically second.

If you can help in terms of volunteering, please let Chris Conboy know, as he is responsible for recruiting volunteers. There will be opportunities that are more burdensome, like volunteering at the blood clinic or manning one of our booths, and there will be other opportunities - like handing out hot chocolate! - that are a little easier. So if you want to get involved, even if you're not sure you can commit a lot of time, please fire Chris an e-mail at conboychris@gmail.com.

The schedule of events and themes, to be updated as CAW comes nearer, is as follows:

Monday- "What Christianity isn't". Apology Booth, and speaker.
Tuesday- "Christian Reasoning". Speaker, hot chocolate, and Ravi Zacharias speaker.
Wednesday- "Christians in Action Part I". Blood donor clinic, speaker, and hot chocolate.
Thursday- "Christians in Action Part II". Volunteer activity, speaker, and Hope for the Sold.
Friday- "Christian Motivation". Speaker, and Collision.
Saturday- "Christian Unity". Inter-denominational worship and communion service.

Pyjama Bowling:

This Friday, we'll be having a good time together down at Lakeview Bowl. We will meet downtown at 7:00 PM, at the front doors of Peterborough Square, and walk down to Lakeview Bowl for our second annual bowling trip. This time, be sure to come in your pyjamas... sorry guys, no going in the buff! For those of you who are busing, there will be a group coming down on the Trent Express that arrives downtown at 6:50! Cost will be approximately $10 a person, which will get you two games and two shoes. Cost is extra for three-legged bowlers.

We will also swing by Harvey's afterwards. Just because we like burgers. So bring extra money if you want some!

You must respond with an affirmative in order to guarantee you'll get a spot, since we have to reserve lanes. The deadline is Wednesday. You can RSVP on the Facebook Group (preferred) or via e-mail at trentchristianfellowship@gmail.com.

Call for Nominations:

This time of year is also when we pick out our executive members for next year. It is your responsibility to pray about and nominate those who you think should be members of the leadership team. If you have someone in mind, send one of our nominations committee members an e-mail. They will then be going through a process of choosing leaders based on a process we will describe in another e-mail shortly.

The nomination committee this year includes Alex McPhie (alex_mcphie@hotmail.com), Hansen Lung (hansen.lung1986@gmail.com), Shoshanna Duke (shoshanna.duke@gmail.com), and Jenn Trouten (jennifertrouten@gmail.com). All are graduating, and will be putting a lot of work into serving the community through this process over the next few weeks, so we thank them in advance!

New Communications Coordinator (in training):

As I advertised in previous e-mails, this is my last year at Trent, and as such I have been aiming to find someone who wants to be the Communications Coordinator next year. Well, after a semester with no sign, I am pleased to announce that Sam McIntaggart has stepped forward, and will be training as the new CC for the rest of the year!

You can expect to get some e-mails from her in all eventuality, and she will be trying her hand at the Weekly soon enough, so be sure to be on the lookout for some good content from your Communications Coordinator to be!

Testimonies and Prayer Requests:

Have a testimony (a short life story detailing some faith experience) or a prayer request that you would like to put before the community? If so, please contact us via email at trentchristianfellowship@gmail.com so I can send it to the group! If you wish it to be anonymous or to have only your first name sent out, just say so!

Bigger World

Theology on Tap:

Tomorrow, Tuesday the 22nd, there will be another Theology on Tap at Champs, at 7:00 PM. The topic will be a Thirst for the Scriptures.

To check out more details, and RSVP, visit the Facebook Group.

Opportunities to Serve:

Our community needs people to serve, and as Christians it gives us a great opportunity to live out the Gospel! These groups don't require any skills or training beforehand, just a willing heart. If you want any more information, or if you've got other opportunities to serve, contact John MacMillan: jhamacmillan@gmail.com

John runs an English Practice meeting for ESL students. Meetings are on Mondays at 8 PM in OC 206, and will consist of reading the scriptures with ESL students. If you want to learn more of the English Language through reading scripture, or if you want to volunteer to help people learn, contact John.

Peterborough Northumberland Victim Services needs volunteers. You can help as a front-line crisis responder, or as support for victims going to court. Either one is a great chance to minister to victims of crime or family disputes, who need emotional support. To get involved, or for more information, email pnvs2@bellnet.ca, or call 748-0324.

The Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre needs volunteers for its 24-hour crisis line. They provide support to anyone who's been the target of sexual assault, harassment, or other victimization. To get involved, or for more info, email ksacvolunteers@nexicom.net or call 748-5901. NOTE: KSAC is currently taking female volunteers ONLY. Men, if you want to support victims of crime, talk to PNVS above.

Inductive study on John:

Andrew Hutchinson, a member of Ferndale, would like to invite Trent students to join in an inductive study of John. Here's a description of the study:

This year at Urbana (www.urbana09.org), students will be studying John 1-4; in preparation for this, I (Andrew Hutchinson) am interested in having an inductive scripture study of John. Anybody (whether you are planning on going to Urbana or not) who is interested in being a part of a scripture study of John 1-4 is very welcome to join. The hope is to have the study Sunday afternoons starting at 3:00PM. As reading week is coming up for many, I'm not sure what week we'll start; depending upon availability, we might wait until after reading week to begin. We should be able to finish John 1-4 before exams, and if people are interested, we could continue studying John after Christmas. AND in case you're interested, I enjoy baking, so don't be surprised if there are fresh cookies available at the study! Anyway, if anybody is either interested in the study or simply has questions or wants more details, please feel free to email me at andrewhutchin@trentu.ca.

Volunteer @ the Bridge:

Hey there TCF people!

I am the After School Program Coordinator with Youth For Christ Peterborough and I am looking for volunteers to work with kids ages 8-13 on either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday afternoons, starting in October. It's a great opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus to kids in Peterborough who really need it. There will be organized games and activities, a tutoring/homework help component, opportunities to cook with the children, and time to share the gospel with the kids in creative ways. If any of these areas interest you, or if you have a passion for kids and for serving Jesus in a tangible way, please get in touch with me. These children need role models like you to take an interest in their lives and point them to the hope that is found in Christ. My number at home is (705)742-7471, and my e-mail is godsgirls13@hotmail.com.

Your sister in Him,

Melanie Shepherd

George Street United Sunday School:

Hello!

I am the director of Sunday School at George Street United Church (located conveniently on George Street) and we have had the privelage of many Trent students as teachers in our program over the years. Unfortunately, we will be losing three fantastic teachers at the end of the school year. You may know Jessica, Emma and Rob. I am wondering if anyone in your group would like the fantastic experience (think how great this will look on your resume!) of helping to deliver the innovative and exciting Sunday School program starting next fall? Certainly you can participate anytime, but we really need some help in September.

If you can't teach, then please also consider joining us for Sunday services at 10am or on Wed. evenings at 7pm for a music filled exploration of the mysteries of faith. There is a very vibrant University/College/Career group that meet for dinner once a month as well (who doesn't like a free meal?) So, hopefully this hasn't landed in your junk mail. If anyone is interested or anyone has any idea how I might find people who are, please drop me a line or give me a call.

THANKS!

Kevin Vaughan
Christian Education Director
George Street United Church
742-4162
P.S. Don't be scared that you'd have to give up every Sunday. We would only
need you once a month
