Hey, everyone!! First off, I would like to thank Sam for stringing together the Opening Sequence for today's Weekly! As the (almost certain) new Communications Coordinator, I've asked her to test out the water a little, and it looks like she managed to pull up some pretty good content. That's not as easy a task as it sounds... that's probably the part that takes me the longest when I do up the Weekly! Thus, I'd like to thank her, and ask all of you to welcome Sam to the Weekly! Also, I would direct your attention to the TCF News section because there is a good list of events there that will keep you up to date on what's coming up to end off the year! This includes a Question and Answer this Friday, along with the announcement of our Executive Candidates. It also includes our end-of-year formal!!! So definitely don't miss the scoop! As well, ads are rolling in big-time, so check them out if you're still looking for an apartment or a roommate. If you've got anything you want put in the Weekly, be sure to let me know soon, since there'll only be three or four more Weeklies before the end of the school year! In Christ, -Ben ![]() Opening Sequence
Angelic Laughter: Divine Reflection: Inspired Word: Mark 10:35-45 (NLT) 35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came over and spoke to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do us a favor.” 36 “What is your request?” he asked. 37 They replied, “When you sit on your glorious throne, we want to sit in places of honor next to you, one on your right and the other on your left.” 38 But Jesus said to them, “You don’t know what you are asking! Are you able to drink from the bitter cup of suffering I am about to drink? Are you able to be baptized with the baptism of suffering I must be baptized with?” 39 “Oh yes,” they replied, “we are able!” Then Jesus told them, “You will indeed drink from my bitter cup and be baptized with my baptism of suffering. 40 But I have no right to say who will sit on my right or my left. God has prepared those places for the ones he has chosen.” 41 When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were indignant. 42 So Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. 43 But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” ![]() News Formal and Vote (or, formal vote?): This Friday, March 26th, we will be having our year-end grad formal! It will be at 7 PM in the Traill Junior Common Room. This is the first time in three years that TCF has had a formal, and we're excited to have you out. The grad formal is not graduates-only. Rather, we will be having a dessert potluck and dance, along with a brief acknowledgment of which TCFers are graduating this year. Bring out your sweets and enjoy the dance together in a fine TCF evening! If you've got a spare evening make sure this is it! As if this weren't enough incentive, we will also have our vote on the new executive that Friday, so we'd like it if everyone possible could be there to usher in the new members! Time and place are going to have to wait for a week, though, as details get sorted out! If you are unsure of who has been chosen for next year's executive, please e-mail us at trentchristianfellowship@gmail.com and I (Ben) will send you the list. Two Fridays from now, April 9th, we will be having our official closing event, which will consist of fun and games outside at Trent. Jenn is looking at putting together a big match of Capture the Flag, and hopefully most of us will feel a little more relaxed by that point in time. And that's it! After this, the Trent Christian Fellowship 2009-2010 school year will officially be over! It's been great, guys... but don't let yourself think it's over yet! Come on out and enjoy the last events for the year! Church in the Caf: This Sunday, March 28th, we will be having the final Church in the Caf of the year! The event will take place in the LEC Cafeteria, at 8 PM. Heather will be leading the worship, and Lloyd Eyre, pastor at Peterborough Free Methodist, will be speaking. Day of Fasting and Prayer: TCF is planning a day of fasting and prayer for the Trent and Peterborough communities. It will take place on Wednesday, March 31st, the Wednesday before Easter. Anyone who wants to participate is encouraged to fast for that day in whatever responsible way they choose. There will be rooms booked on campus to meet and pray in during the day, for those who are on campus that day.
Please pray for the students, staff and faculty at Trent. Pray that they may hear the Gospel, believe, repent and follow Jesus. Pray for the spiritual well-being of everyone, especially Christians, in this community. Pray for each others' specific needs, and give thanks for what God has done in our lives. Pray that all Christians would be fearless in sharing the Gospel, and would do it with love and wisdom.
For those inexperienced with fasting, the concept is pretty simple: one abstains from food (or something else) for a set period of time, in order to devote oneself to prayer. Some people choose to fast from all food and water, or all food (but still drink water/juice), or meat. Others eat a reduced diet (for example, only a little plain rice). Some choose to fast from something that isn't food (iPod, Facebook, email, television, alcohol, smoking, etc.). What you choose to fast from is entirely up to you and God. Fasting from food does not make you more spiritual than fasting from Facebook. If there is any reason you feel you shouldn't fast from food, but still want to participate, choose something else.
NOTE: If you are going to participate
in this fast, please read and understand ALL the Medical Concerns
described below. Our first priority is everyone's safety, so please
don't do anything risky. Medical Concerns While fasting, it's a good idea to avoid heavy physical exertion. Also, make sure you get a good night's sleep beforehand, and are well hydrated (especially if you're fasting from water for the day). If you suffer from any of the following conditions or symptoms, I encourage you emphatically NOT to fast from food: any illness (including cold, flu, infection, etc.), fever, anemia, low blood sugar, diabetes, seizures, or an eating disorder. Additionally, if you are feeling unwell, weak, or overly tired at the start of the day, or if there is ANY possibility you could be pregnant, please do NOT fast from food. This is for medical reasons: fasting while affected by any of these conditions is not more spiritual, it is foolhardy. Again, if anything in this paragraph applies to you, please don't fast from food. If you want to participate, I would recommend another non-food thing for you to fast from. During your fast, you may feel certain symptoms: fatigue, weakness, dehydration, bad breath, nausea, headache, hunger, irritability, mood changes, or difficulty concentrating, among others. These are normal and to be expected. If they become problematic, or if you start to experience dizziness, disorientation, seeing stars, fainting, or anything else that could possibly cause a safety hazard to yourself or others, you should STOP THE FAST, eat and drink something, and get the help you need. If you're going to be fasting, make sure you have someone (a roommate or a friend) who will check on you. If you need help and are on campus, call First Response at 748-1333. They have been made aware of this fast, and want to help anyone who needs it. Even if you're just feeling dizzy or disoriented, don't hesitate to call them. In fact, you should probably program their number into your cell phone. If you're off-campus, especially if you don't have someone who will take care of you, don't hesitate to call 911 for an ambulance. If you've got any questions about fasting, or this event particularly, please contact me (John MacMillan): jhamacmillan@gmail.com. If you'd be more comfortable talking with a woman (or with someone who's not me), feel free to contact Michelle McLean, the Health Educator at Trent: michellemclean@trentu.ca or 748-1011 x7162. Tell her that you are fasting with Trent Christian Fellowship, and she'll be able to give you the information you need. I've been working with Michelle to assemble information about making this event safer for everyone. New Communications Coordinator (in training): As I advertised in previous e-mails, this is my last year at Trent, and as such I have been aiming to find someone who wants to be the Communications Coordinator next year. Well, after a semester with no sign, I am pleased to announce that Sam McIntaggart has stepped forward, and will be training as the new CC for the rest of the year! You can expect to get some e-mails from her in all eventuality, and she will be trying her hand at the Weekly soon enough, so be sure to be on the lookout for some good content from your Communications Coordinator to be! Testimonies and Prayer Requests: Have a testimony (a short life story detailing some faith experience) or a prayer request that you would like to put before the community? If so, please contact us via email at trentchristianfellowship@gmail.com so I can send it to the group! If you wish it to be anonymous or to have only your first name sent out, just say so! Here's a description of the study: This year at Urbana (www.urbana09.org), students will be studying John 1-4; in preparation for this, I (Andrew Hutchinson) am interested in having an inductive scripture study of John. Anybody (whether you are planning on going to Urbana or not) who is interested in being a part of a scripture study of John 1-4 is very welcome to join. The hope is to have the study Sunday afternoons starting at 3:00PM. As reading week is coming up for many, I'm not sure what week we'll start; depending upon availability, we might wait until after reading week to begin. We should be able to finish John 1-4 before exams, and if people are interested, we could continue studying John after Christmas. AND in case you're interested, I enjoy baking, so don't be surprised if there are fresh cookies available at the study! Anyway, if anybody is either interested in the study or simply has questions or wants more details, please feel free to email me at andrewhutchin@trentu.ca. Volunteer @ the Bridge: Hey there TCF people! I am the After School Program Coordinator with Youth For Christ Peterborough and I am looking for volunteers to work with kids ages 8-13 on either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday afternoons, starting in October. It's a great opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus to kids in Peterborough who really need it. There will be organized games and activities, a tutoring/homework help component, opportunities to cook with the children, and time to share the gospel with the kids in creative ways. If any of these areas interest you, or if you have a passion for kids and for serving Jesus in a tangible way, please get in touch with me. These children need role models like you to take an interest in their lives and point them to the hope that is found in Christ. George Street United Sunday School: Hello! I am the director of Sunday School at George Street United Church (located conveniently on George Street) and we have had the privelage of many Trent students as teachers in our program over the years. Unfortunately, we will be losing three fantastic teachers at the end of the school year. You may know Jessica, Emma and Rob. I am wondering if anyone in your group would like the fantastic experience (think how great this will look on your resume!) of helping to deliver the innovative and exciting Sunday School program starting next fall? Certainly you can participate anytime, but we really need some help in September. If you can't teach, then please also consider joining us for Sunday services at 10am or on Wed. evenings at 7pm for a music filled exploration of the mysteries of faith. There is a very vibrant University/College/Career group that meet for dinner once a month as well (who doesn't like a free meal?) So, hopefully this hasn't landed in your junk mail. If anyone is interested or anyone has any idea how I might find people who are, please drop me a line or give me a call. THANKS! Kevin Vaughan Christian Education Director George Street United Church 742-4162 P.S. Don't be scared that you'd have to give up every Sunday. We would only need you once a month Looking for a Room: Responsible Trent student, Nicholas, looking for a room. For reference call Joan at (613) 389-0920.
