I am praying that you all have a great week! Because Jesus lives, Sam (Communications Coordinator) ![]() Opening Sequence
Angelic Laughter: Divine Reflection: Inspired Word: Jeremiah 29:11-14 (ESV) For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. 12 Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. 13 You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. 14I will be found by you, declares the LORD, and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you, declares the LORD, and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile. ![]() News Fall Retreat Our annual fall retreat is this coming weekend! The cost is $60 for the weekend (includes travel, food and accommodations). If you would like to go on retreat, but have not signed up yet, please email Sydney Kuipers or Sarah Harris immediately. Waiver forms will be sent out, if you haven't already received it. We will be meeting outside of the Bookstore (West Bank bus stop) at 6 pm on Friday night. We will be arriving back on Sunday afternoon. Special note: if you would like to come but are unable to afford it, please talk to Sydney, Sarah or Laura Neufeld as there is additional funding to help some students. Encouragement from the Exec One of the hopes of the Exec this year is to really see TCF reaching out and sharing our faith on campus and in Peterborough. One of the ways that we would like to encourage you to be able to do this, and to grow so that you are able to share, is through building accountability and prayer partnerships. We would like to encourage everyone to find someone of the same gender (two or three is great too!), to meet with weekly to pray and strengthen each other. For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them. Matthew 18:20 Request from Laura: If you are a member of Champlain or Gzowski can you please notify Laura by email when they send out the notification that they are accepting funding requests? Her email is: l.neufeld@live.ca Church in the Caf Our next Church in the Caf will be Sunday, October 17 at 8 pm at the LEC Caf. Testimonies and Prayer Requests: Have a testimony (a short life story detailing some faith experience) or a prayer request that you would like to put before the community? If so, please contact us via email at trentchristianfellowship@gmail.com so I can send it to the group! If you wish it to be anonymous or to have only your first name sent out, just say so! Opportunities to Serve:
Peterborough Northumberland Victim Services needs volunteers. You can help as a front-line crisis responder, or as support for victims going to court. Either one is a great chance to minister to victims of crime or family disputes, who need emotional support. To get involved, or for more information, email pnvs2@bellnet.ca, or call 748-0324. The Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre needs volunteers for its 24-hour crisis line. They provide support to anyone who's been the target of sexual assault, harassment, or other victimization. To get involved, or for more info, email ksacvolunteers@nexicom.net or call 748-5901. NOTE: KSAC is currently taking female volunteers ONLY. Men, if you want to support victims of crime, talk to PNVS above. Starting in November, on Monday evenings Sam McIntaggart is organizing an ESL Bible Study. If you are interested in volunteering as a helper, or would like to come to practice, please email Sam at sam.mc13@gmail.com. Volunteer @ the Bridge: Hey there awesome TCF people! Just want to let all of you know about a great opportunity to volunteer with Youth For Christ/Youth Unlimited here in Peterborough. We have programs for kids (ages 8-13) and youth (ages 14-25), so whichever group you relate to best is fine with us! Our goal for the youth we work with is spiritual transformation through Jesus, and we labour towards this end through various programs where we build relationships with kids, care for their needs holistically, build trust, and earn credibility to speak Truth into their lives. From there, we aim to funnel them into mentoring relationships (one-on-one and gender specific) and what we call “Places of Discipleship”, where they can grow deeper in their faith. If this sparks your interest, or if you have a passion for kids/youth and for serving Jesus in a tangible way, please get in touch with us. The children and youth of this city need role models LIKE YOU to take an interest in their lives and point them to the hope that is found in Christ! You can contact either Carlo Raponi at carlo@youthunlimitedkaw.com, or Melanie Shepherd at melanie@youthunlimitedkaw.com, or phone and ask for either of us at the Youth Unlimited office (743-2900). All for Jesus! Melanie Shepherd
Murray St. Baptist Church
An informal learning centre, an International Coffee House attempts to meet the language learning and social needs of international newcomers to an Eastern Ontario community, Peterborough. I have been a host family coordinator for international learners at Trent University. I presently have the role of program planner for the international Coffee House. Community members are volunteers in this program and it is answerable to the governing body of a local church and to the committee of organizers itself. I am associated with the New Canadian Centre and the International Coffee House is a volunteer-based organization affiliated with the Peterborough Partnership Council for Immigration and Integration as a member group. This report informs the reader of the extent of activities and of the participants of the Coffee House. It is designed to address a concern that will be a concern in any community that is opening its doors to international new comers to Canada. It will demonstrate the need for informal learning opportunities, sometimes occurring along with formal in this city. I want to know how the informal learning of international students and newcomers, in conjunction with interaction with community members in an informal Coffee House affects English language proficiency in speaking and listening skills. How does the bridging of international students with fellow students as well as with other international newcomers and community members in friendship and association provide learning support for those involved in formal studies? How does friendship and association for international newcomers with members of the community promote increased cultural competence and comfort? We examine whether these and other factors contribute to the growth and development of personal confidence for the international newcomer. Cynthia and John Hucks, ITCH Coordinators 742 2562 Big Brothers/Big Sisters Big Brothers Big Sisters is currently seeking 15 Trent Volunteers to take part in our In School Mentoring Program. This program is a great way to give back to the community and to help out a child in need. All it takes is ONE HOUR A WEEK. In School Mentoring is a small commitment that makes a big difference. Become a mentor to a child in a school environment. You will help build a child's self-esteem and school performance while having fun. Each mentor will get a choice in what school they wish to mentor a child at and in most cases the mentor is able to choose the time of day that he or she visits the child in school. This is not a program based on academics but based on fun! If you are interested in finding out more information or volunteering in this program please contact me directly at tammy.thomas@cogeco.ca or 743-6100 ext. 1 to get involved today! ONE CHILD. George Street United Sunday School: Hello! I am the director of Sunday School at George Street United Church (located conveniently on George Street) and we have had the privelage of many Trent students as teachers in our program over the years. Unfortunately, we will be losing three fantastic teachers at the end of the school year. You may know Jessica, Emma and Rob. I am wondering if anyone in your group would like the fantastic experience (think how great this will look on your resume!) of helping to deliver the innovative and exciting Sunday School program starting next fall? Certainly you can participate anytime, but we really need some help in September. If you can't teach, then please also consider joining us for Sunday services at 10am or on Wed. evenings at 7pm for a music filled exploration of the mysteries of faith. There is a very vibrant University/College/Career group that meet for dinner once a month as well (who doesn't like a free meal?) So, hopefully this hasn't landed in your junk mail. If anyone is interested or anyone has any idea how I might find people who are, please drop me a line or give me a call. THANKS! Kevin Vaughan Christian Education Director George Street United Church 742-4162 P.S. Don't be scared that you'd have to give up every Sunday. We would only need you once a month Looking for a Room: Responsible Trent student, Nicholas, looking for a room. For reference call Joan at (613) 389-0920.
