2010.10.11

  October 11th, 2010

Hello Everyone!

Thanksgiving is now behind us, and I hope that everyone enjoyed the time with friends and family. I hope also that everyone is coming back to a shortened week feeling refreshed! We have a lot planned for this week, so we would love to see you out at an event or two even though midterms and assignments are creeping up on us so swiftly.

Please take a look at our News section as we are pioneering daily prayer on campus, this is the second week and we would like everyone to feel free to join in! The new page about it is up on the lefthand sidebar, so please take a look for names and locations there.  Also, Church in the Caf is happening for the second time this year, so take a look for some details about that. There are a lot of volunteer opportunities in our Bigger World section, so please take a look at how you can become involved in the community. If you've missed the past few weeks, take a look at the Archives to see our Meet the Exec special feature. If you would like to contact any of the exec, you can go here to find their email addresses. There are also some ads and community events so please look at our Community Ads section and our Bigger World section.

I would like to encourage you all to read the new Constitution (found on the left hand side bar) to find out more about what TCF is going to look like this coming year.

Have an excellent week!

Because Jesus lives,
Sam (Communications Coordinator)

Opening Sequence

Angelic Laughter:

Divine Reflection:

This past week was Mental Health Awareness Week, which is an issue that everyone deals with, whether they experience it personally, or someone they know experiences it. This is an article about issues that everyone deals with, not just mental health, and how they affect Christians. You can find it here.

Inspired Word:

Psalm 100 (NIV)
Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.

 2 Worship the LORD with gladness;
       come before him with joyful songs.

 3 Know that the LORD is God.
       It is he who made us, and we are his [a] ;
       we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving
       and his courts with praise;
       give thanks to him and praise his name.

 5 For the LORD is good and his love endures forever;
       his faithfulness continues through all generations.

News

Message from our Evangelism/Outreach Coordinators

Jenn Knight and Chris Conboy have been getting a lot organized for TCF. A great desire of theirs is to connect members of TCF to the community in service. If you would like to get involved in the community in some way but aren't sure how, contact Jenn or Chris (or both!) and they would love to meet with you to talk and discuss different ministries that you can get plugged into. You can email Jenn at sunnfyre@hotmail.com and Chris can be contacted at christopherco3@trentu.ca.

Prayer Walk

Thursday, October 14th we will be having another prayer walk on campus. We will be meeting at the Tim Hortons in Bata Library at 8 pm. Please join us in prayer for our campus, it is really important to lift our university and the people involved up to God.

Daily Prayer on Campus

Starting this week, we are having daily prayer on campus (during the week, Monday to Friday). There will be a new section on the website within a day or two listing the leaders for the day. Our goal is to have 2 people per day praying between 1 and 3 pm each day. If you are interested in joining in prayer, Monday to Wednesday and Fridays you can meet in BL 107.1. On Thursdays prayer will be happening in the Champlain Music Room. It is a great opportunity to meet with God and to cover the university in prayer and love. If you are interested in being involved email Jenn at sunnfyre@hotmail.com or Sam at trentchristianfellowship@gmail.com.

Request from Laura:

If you are a member of Champlain or Gzowski can you please notify Laura by email when they send out the notification that they are accepting funding requests? Her email is: l.neufeld@live.ca

Church in the Caf

Our next Church in the Caf will be this Sunday, October 17 at 8 pm at the LEC Caf.

Fall Retreat Photos

Ben Peltz has been kind enough to share all of the photos he took on Winter Retreat. You can find them here.

Testimonies and Prayer Requests:

Have a testimony (a short life story detailing some faith experience) or a prayer request that you would like to put before the community? If so, please contact us via email at trentchristianfellowship@gmail.com so I can send it to the group! If you wish it to be anonymous or to have only your first name sent out, just say so!

Event at Edmison Heights Bible Chapel

The youth group at Edmison Heights Bible Chapel, are hosting Andy Bannister with Ravi Zacharias International Ministries (RZIM) to speak to the youth. He will be covering apologetic issues, teaching the kids how to work through questions and also answering questions that the kids have. The evening consists of worship music, Andy speaking, question time, and a hang out time after where Andy will be around to talk with the youth some more and drinks and snacks will be provided. The cost is $1 per person which goes as a donation to RZIM. The youth leaders really want TCF to be involved with this. Volunteer @ the Bridge:

Hey there awesome TCF people!

Just want to let all of you know about a great opportunity to volunteer with Youth For Christ/Youth Unlimited here in Peterborough. We have programs for kids (ages 8-13) and youth (ages 14-25), so whichever group you relate to best is fine with us! Our goal for the youth we work with is spiritual transformation through Jesus, and we labour towards this end through various programs where we build relationships with kids, care for their needs holistically, build trust, and earn credibility to speak Truth into their lives. From there, we aim to funnel them into mentoring relationships (one-on-one and gender specific) and what we call “Places of Discipleship”, where they can grow deeper in their faith. If this sparks your interest, or if you have a passion for kids/youth and for serving Jesus in a tangible way, please get in touch with us. The children and youth of this city need role models LIKE YOU to take an interest in their lives and point them to the hope that is found in Christ! You can contact either Carlo Raponi at carlo@youthunlimitedkaw.com, or Melanie Shepherd at melanie@youthunlimitedkaw.com, or phone and ask for either of us at the Youth Unlimited office (743-2900).

All for Jesus!

Melanie Shepherd

International Tea and Coffee House (ITCH)

An informal learning centre, an International Coffee House attempts to meet the language learning and social needs of international newcomers to an Eastern Ontario community, Peterborough. I have been a host family coordinator for international learners at Trent University. I presently have the role of program planner for the international Coffee House. Community members are volunteers in this program and it is answerable to the governing body of a local church and to the committee of organizers itself. I am associated with the New Canadian Centre and the International Coffee House is a volunteer-based organization affiliated with the Peterborough Partnership Council for Immigration and Integration as a member group.

This report informs the reader of the extent of activities and of the participants of the Coffee House. It is designed to address a concern that will be a concern in any community that is opening its doors to international new comers to Canada. It will demonstrate the need for informal learning opportunities, sometimes occurring along with formal in this city. I want to know how the informal learning of international students and newcomers, in conjunction with interaction with community members in an informal Coffee House affects English language proficiency in speaking and listening skills. How does the bridging of international students with fellow students as well as with other international newcomers and community members in friendship and association provide learning support for those involved in formal studies? How does friendship and association for international newcomers with members of the community promote increased cultural competence and comfort?

We examine whether these and other factors contribute to the growth and development of personal confidence for the international newcomer.

Cynthia and John Hucks,

ITCH Coordinators 742 2562

Big Brothers/Big Sisters

Big Brothers Big Sisters is currently seeking 15 Trent Volunteers to take part in our In School Mentoring Program. This program is a great way to give back to the community and to help out a child in need. All it takes is ONE HOUR A WEEK.

In School Mentoring is a small commitment that makes a big difference. Become a mentor to a child in a school environment. You will help build a child's self-esteem and school performance while having fun.

Each mentor will get a choice in what school they wish to mentor a child at and in most cases the mentor is able to choose the time of day that he or she visits the child in school. This is not a program based on academics but based on fun!

If you are interested in finding out more information or volunteering in this program please contact me directly at tammy.thomas@cogeco.ca or 743-6100 ext. 1 to get involved today!

George Street United Sunday School:

Hello!

I am the director of Sunday School at George Street United Church (located conveniently on George Street) and we have had the privelage of many Trent students as teachers in our program over the years. Unfortunately, we will be losing three fantastic teachers at the end of the school year. You may know Jessica, Emma and Rob. I am wondering if anyone in your group would like the fantastic experience (think how great this will look on your resume!) of helping to deliver the innovative and exciting Sunday School program starting next fall? Certainly you can participate anytime, but we really need some help in September.

If you can't teach, then please also consider joining us for Sunday services at 10am or on Wed. evenings at 7pm for a music filled exploration of the mysteries of faith. There is a very vibrant University/College/Career group that meet for dinner once a month as well (who doesn't like a free meal?) So, hopefully this hasn't landed in your junk mail. If anyone is interested or anyone has any idea how I might find people who are, please drop me a line or give me a call.

THANKS!

Kevin Vaughan
Christian Education Director
George Street United Church

P.S. Don't be scared that you'd have to give up every Sunday. We would only
need you once a month
