Inspired Word:

Romans 4:20-22 (NIV)
In regards to Abraham:

Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. 22 This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.”

Open House: Coffee House and Vision Casting

Friday November 19, 2010 (that is this Friday) we will be having our annual Coffee House! We will be meeting at the LEC Pit at 7 pm. If you have something in mind, talent-wise, please email Sarah Harris at um_i_forget_@hotmail.com or Sydney Kuipers at sydneykuipers@trentu.ca with your talent so that they can put together a lineup for the evening. We encourage you to take part with a song, a poem, a skit or a dance, and it can be serious or fun; we welcome the opportunity to share in your creativity! We will have coffee, tea, hot chocolate and a few little treats, so please join us for an amazing time. This event is also BYOM- Bring Your Own Mug, and the most creative mug wins a prize, so bring your favourite! The Coffee House will also be a time for us to share the vision of TCF for this year and for future years. Please come and find out more about the group in this time.

There will also be a short presentation on TCF's vision for this year. You can ask questions and we ask that you come so that you can know how to better pray for our group.

Men's Workout Group

A message from Chris Conboy about something exciting starting up:

This is an invitation for all men interested in working on their body while sharing life, struggles, and victory as followers of Jesus in the process. Its remarkably important to meet regularly, and there are numerous  to strengthen, encourage and challenge one-another, looking-after ourselves spiritually, mentally, and physically. Paul of the New Testament urged the church in Rome to give their bodies as living sacrifices, being the temple of God's Holy Spirit, which translates to being an act of authentic worship to God. The goal is to be practical and real in our pursuit of the meaning of life, everyday living and walking life in community that honours God and one-another.

I meet regularly with two other men, Peter and Bryce, and others come less frequently at Trent's  Athletics Complex. We generally work out three days a week, normally Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and it would be great to have you join us. If you're interested, you can contact myself at christopherco3@trentu.ca or Peter Belfry at peterbelfry@gmail.com to find out specific details. I'm also aware that some of you may have friends in Peterborough who don't go to Trent, but may be interested in this kind of thing, but may not be able to come out due to financial reasons. Depending on available time and your expressed interest, we'll also look into possibility of meeting outside of Trent's complex for those people, perhaps going sledding, hiking, biking, and playing Ultimate Frisbee. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Atlantic Concert

Friday, November 26th we will be hosting the band Atlantic at the Great Hall for a concert, with the doors opening at 6 pm. They are a worship band from New Brunswick, and we are very excited to be hosting them. Tickets will be $3 advance, or $5 at the door, so keep an eye on the Weekly for more information on when and where to get your tickets. You can listen to some of their music and find out more about them by going to their website here: http://www.myspace.com/atlanticcommunity. Tickets will be sold on November 12th and 15th at Bata Library, times will be announced later. Also, please check out the Facebook Event associated with the TCF group.

Message from our Evangelism/Outreach Coordinators

Jenn Knight and Chris Conboy have been getting a lot organized for TCF. A great desire of theirs is to connect members of TCF to the community in service. If you would like to get involved in the community in some way but aren't sure how, contact Jenn or Chris (or both!) and they would love to meet with you to talk and discuss different ministries that you can get plugged into. You can email Jenn at sunnfyre@hotmail.com and Chris can be contacted at christopherco3@trentu.ca.

Daily Prayer on Campus

This is our third week that we are having daily prayer on campus (during the week, Monday to Friday). You can go here: Daily Prayer to see the leaders and room locations. We are currently on Week 1 schedule for prayer. Our goal is to have 2 people per day praying between 1 and 3 pm each day. If you are interested in joining in prayer, Monday to Wednesday and Fridays you can meet in BL 107.1. On Thursdays prayer will be happening in the Champlain Music Room. It is a great opportunity to meet with God and to cover the university in prayer and love. If you are interested in being involved email Jenn at sunnfyre@hotmail.com or Sam at trentchristianfellowship@gmail.com.

Request from Laura:

If you are a member of Champlain or Gzowski can you please notify Laura by email when they send out the notification that they are accepting funding requests? Her email is: l.neufeld@live.ca

Testimonies and Prayer Requests:

Have a testimony (a short life story detailing some faith experience) or a prayer request that you would like to put before the community? If so, please contact us via email at trentchristianfellowship@gmail.com so I can send it to the group! If you wish it to be anonymous or to have only your first name sent out, just say so!

Volunteer @ the Bridge:

Hey there awesome TCF people!

Just want to let all of you know about a great opportunity to volunteer with Youth For Christ/Youth Unlimited here in Peterborough. We have programs for kids (ages 8-13) and youth (ages 14-25), so whichever group you relate to best is fine with us! Our goal for the youth we work with is spiritual transformation through Jesus, and we labour towards this end through various programs where we build relationships with kids, care for their needs holistically, build trust, and earn credibility to speak Truth into their lives. From there, we aim to funnel them into mentoring relationships (one-on-one and gender specific) and what we call “Places of Discipleship”, where they can grow deeper in their faith. If this sparks your interest, or if you have a passion for kids/youth and for serving Jesus in a tangible way, please get in touch with us. The children and youth of this city need role models LIKE YOU to take an interest in their lives and point them to the hope that is found in Christ! You can contact either Carlo Raponi at carlo@youthunlimitedkaw.com, or Melanie Shepherd at melanie@youthunlimitedkaw.com, or phone and ask for either of us at the Youth Unlimited office (743-2900).

All for Jesus!

Melanie Shepherd

International Tea and Coffee House (ITCH)

An informal learning centre, an International Coffee House attempts to meet the language learning and social needs of international newcomers to an Eastern Ontario community, Peterborough. I have been a host family coordinator for international learners at Trent University. I presently have the role of program planner for the international Coffee House. Community members are volunteers in this program and it is answerable to the governing body of a local church and to the committee of organizers itself. I am associated with the New Canadian Centre and the International Coffee House is a volunteer-based organization affiliated with the Peterborough Partnership Council for Immigration and Integration as a member group.

This report informs the reader of the extent of activities and of the participants of the Coffee House. It is designed to address a concern that will be a concern in any community that is opening its doors to international new comers to Canada. It will demonstrate the need for informal learning opportunities, sometimes occurring along with formal in this city. I want to know how the informal learning of international students and newcomers, in conjunction with interaction with community members in an informal Coffee House affects English language proficiency in speaking and listening skills. How does the bridging of international students with fellow students as well as with other international newcomers and community members in friendship and association provide learning support for those involved in formal studies? How does friendship and association for international newcomers with members of the community promote increased cultural competence and comfort?

We examine whether these and other factors contribute to the growth and development of personal confidence for the international newcomer.

Cynthia and John Hucks,

ITCH Coordinators 742 2562

Big Brothers/Big Sisters

Big Brothers Big Sisters is currently seeking 15 Trent Volunteers to take part in our In School Mentoring Program. This program is a great way to give back to the community and to help out a child in need. All it takes is ONE HOUR A WEEK.

In School Mentoring is a small commitment that makes a big difference. Become a mentor to a child in a school environment. You will help build a child's self-esteem and school performance while having fun.

Each mentor will get a choice in what school they wish to mentor a child at and in most cases the mentor is able to choose the time of day that he or she visits the child in school. This is not a program based on academics but based on fun!

If you are interested in finding out more information or volunteering in this program please contact me directly at tammy.thomas@cogeco.ca or 743-6100 ext. 1 to get involved today!

ONE CHILD. ONE HOUR A WEEK.

George Street United Sunday School:

Hello!

I am the director of Sunday School at George Street United Church (located conveniently on George Street) and we have had the privelage of many Trent students as teachers in our program over the years. Unfortunately, we will be losing three fantastic teachers at the end of the school year. You may know Jessica, Emma and Rob. I am wondering if anyone in your group would like the fantastic experience (think how great this will look on your resume!) of helping to deliver the innovative and exciting Sunday School program starting next fall? Certainly you can participate anytime, but we really need some help in September.

If you can't teach, then please also consider joining us for Sunday services at 10am or on Wed. evenings at 7pm for a music filled exploration of the mysteries of faith. There is a very vibrant University/College/Career group that meet for dinner once a month as well (who doesn't like a free meal?) So, hopefully this hasn't landed in your junk mail. If anyone is interested or anyone has any idea how I might find people who are, please drop me a line or give me a call.

THANKS!

Kevin Vaughan
Christian Education Director
George Street United Church
742-4162
P.S. Don't be scared that you'd have to give up every Sunday. We would only
need you once a month
